How to Read a Supplement Certificate of Analysis

A supplement Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a document describing specifications and results for an identified material or product batch. To assess its relevance, match the product, lot number, and dates to your bottle, then review exactly which tests were performed.

1. Match the product and lot

A report for one formula or batch does not automatically cover another. Start with the product name, lot number, manufacturing date, and expiration date. If your bottle has a different lot, request the corresponding document.

2. Separate specifications from results

A specification describes the acceptance criteria. A result describes what the report records for that test. Read both columns, along with units and the test method. A word such as “conform” should be interpreted in the context of its listed specification.

3. Check how ingredient amounts were established

Look for notes such as “based on raw material input,” “present by input,” or “batch record review.” Those describe a different basis from a measured assay of the finished product. Ask the issuer to explain the method if it is unclear.

4. Check the scope of testing

Identity, ingredient amount, microbiology, and contaminants are different questions. A report addressing one does not establish all the others. Do not infer heavy-metal testing when the document does not list it.

5. Check the document’s limits

A COA is not clinical evidence that a product will deliver a health outcome. FDA explains that dietary supplements generally are not approved by FDA before marketing. Facility registration and product approval are different concepts. Read FDA’s consumer questions and answers.

A Nutri Nation example

The available Keto ACV Gummies report identifies lot 15939, manufacturing in March 2024, and an expiration date in March 2026. That historical document should not be treated as proof for a different or current batch. Review the source report in our testing document library.

What should I ask customer support?

Provide the product name and lot number from your bottle. Ask for the applicable COA, the laboratory or issuer, the report date, and an explanation of any input-based or conditional-release notes.
